      Michael Mann's compelling biopic of champion boxer Muhammad Ali, tracing his rapid rise through the ranks to the top of his profession, his first marriage and conversion to Islam. The film also charts the controversy that dogged him as he refused to submit to military conscription, and culminates in his legendary 1974 title fight with George Foreman. Will Smith impresses in the title role, while the supporting cast includes Jamie Foxx, Jon Voight, Jada Pinkett, Mario Van Peebles and LeVar Burton

      Wesley Snipes stars as Federal Marshall Pete Nessip who, aided by his brother, is escorting a convicted computer hacker to a new facility. Events soon spiral out of control though, and the convict escapes, killing Pete's brother on the way. The tough cop teams up with a professional skydiver to capture the fugitive and avenge his sibling's death. Action thriller, with Gary Busey, Yancy Butler and Michael Jeter

      A desperate homeless man, driven to the brink of despair by the deaths of his only friends, agrees to guide a group of rich hunters into the wilderness - little realising he is to be their quarry. Fast-paced thriller hampered by the unoriginal plot which may leave viewers with a spot of deja vu. Ice-T stars as the prey, with Rutger Hauer, Charles Dutton and Gary Busey among the thrill-seekers

      A French Foreign Legionnaire deserts after his brother is killed in a failed drugs deal, and uses his bare-knuckle fighting skills to support his poverty-stricken sister-in-law and niece. Violent action adventure boasting dreadful acting but the usual selection of well-choreographed fight scenes, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Harrison Page and Deborah Rennard

      The Quest

      Jean-Claude Van Damme cast himself as the hero in this, his surprisingly entertaining directorial debut. He plays a New York street thug who's saved from life on the fringes of society by con-man Roger Moore, who launches him on a new career in the world of bare-knuckle fighting. Action adventure, co-starring James Remar, Janet Gunn, Jack McGee and Aki Aleong

      One Eight Seven

      A dedicated teacher from New York leaves for Los Angeles, where he he takes on a new class in a violent neighbourhood, and finds himself forced to break all the rules in a bid to get through to his out-of-control pupils. Nonsensical drama, squandering the opportunity to address a serious contemporary issue in favour of cheap Hollywood cliches. A suitably intense Samuel L Jackson does what he can in the lead, alongside John Heard and Kelly Rowan
