Struggling to make ends meet, he takes a job as a substitute music teacher at an exclusive private school, and sets about moulding his pupils into rock gods. Jack Black stars in this comedy from director Richard Linklater, who draws fine performances from the young supporting cast. Also starring Joan Cusack and Mike White

A small American town in the middle of nowhere comes under attack from ravenous subterranean flesh-eating monsters. Luckily, a pair of rough-and-ready handymen are available to lead the mismatched locals into battle against the mysterious creatures. Gloriously daft horror, played for laughs more than thrills but still boasting some genuinely nerve-jangling moments. Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Finn Carter and Michael Gross star.

      Air Force One

Blockbusting action thriller, starring Harrison Ford as the US president, who is forced to take drastic measures to ensure the safety of his family when their plane is hijacked by Russian terrorists. Gary Oldman proves that Brits are best when it comes to playing baddies by co-starring as the leading villain, while Glenn Close, Dean Stockwell and William H Macy also add a little class to the lightweight proceedings

Director Ridley Scott's Oscar-winning period epic stars Russell Crowe as Maximus, a capable Roman general and trusted advisor to ageing emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris). When the elderly man dies, his devious son Commodus takes his place on the throne, determined to become the greatest ruler his country has ever seen. Commodus's concern that Maximus poses a threat to his power prompts the ruthless new emperor to order the killing of him and his family, but Maximus escapes his captors and goes on to become a gladiator in the Colosseum. However, he never loses sight of his prime goal - to exact revenge on the man responsible for the murder of his wife and son. Joaquin Phoenix plays the twisted villain, with support from Derek Jacobi, Connie Nielsen and a fine swansong performance from Oliver Reed, who died during production

      Under Siege

Steven Seagal stars in this slick action blockbuster in the Die Hard vein. Set on board a battleship, the action begins when terrorists infiltrate the vessel, determined to steal its arsenal of nuclear weapons. However, they didn't count on resourceful cook Seagal - who, along with a semi-naked stripper (Erika Eleniak), attempts to thwart their plans. Ridiculous but wildly entertaining thanks to Andrew Davis's direction and a cracking pace. With Gary Busey and Tommy Lee Jones as the cartoon-like bad guys
