Odds, ends and oddities at the close of network TV's summer "press tour"
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Dazed but perhaps not quite confused, television critics from here, there and everywhere have parted ways with the two-week Television Critics Association "press tour." It certainly had its moments, which I hope you've been reading about in these spaces. And now, here are a few outtakes to fill out this final dispatch. ****** Jane Lynch hopes to do a song-and-dance number at some point during the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards, which she'll host September 18th on Fox. But she wants to spare viewers the sight of too much Sue Sylvester, the acerbic she-devil she plays on Fox's… read more »

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Tim Allen knows what works for him. And on this particular day, he understands the circumstances, too. These are the last hours of a two-week Television Critics Association "press tour," which presents the former Home Improvement star with both an opportunity for ad lib comedy and an audience that's pretty much out of it. "Oh, they're low," he said for starters Monday morning. "They're already tired. Already pissed off and tired." For which he got a laugh. Allen, 58, is returning to prime-time and ABC after an 11-year absence. He'll basically be playing the same kind… read more »

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Indignation bordering on hostility used to be a fairly regular occurrence on this merry-go-round otherwise known as the Television Critics Association "press tour." Once upon a time, in the 1980s, NBC even canceled its entire day over what it termed a "civility issue." But interview sessions are now mostly case studies in vanilla decorum. Many writers get more upset over the quality of Internet service on the laptops into which they stare fixedly. For them, actually asking a question is rarer than the beef tenderloin served at many a network party over the years. But we… read more »

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Desperate Housewives will be over after the upcoming season, but there's no recession in the numbers of women gainfully employed in lead roles on ABC. Particularly in series of a more or less serious nature. All four of the network's new fall season dramas -- Charlie's Angels, Pan Am, Revenge and Once Upon a Time -- are fronted by females, with men mostly served as side dishes. One can say pretty much the same of three returning series -- Private Practice, Body of Proof and Grey's Anatomy -- although Patrick Dempsey's "Dr. McDreamy" certainly has drawn considerable… read more »

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- ABC's signature series of The Aughts will be heading down Wisteria Lane toward memory lane. The network announced Sunday that the upcoming eighth season of Desperate Housewives also will be its last. Entertainment president Paul Lee termed it a "victory lap" for the Sunday night serial drama, which "sort of put this network on the map" and helped to brand ABC as a prime-time address for weekly hours of empowered women. A full complement of 22 episodes will take DH to the finish line. The show's creator and executive producer, Marc Cherry, later was brought onstage… read more »
