Eddie Murphy as Oscar host: Will he really be a difference maker?
Does the Oscar host really matter much anymore? Is he or she basically a traffic cop after a big opening flourish to start the proceedings? Or can a deft host with an ability to ad lib on the fly make the show go on without it seeming to go on and on and on before the climactic big prizes are awarded? Here we go in alphabetical order, with only winners, not nominees, making this final cut. 1. BEN AFFLECK (best screenplay, with Matt Damon, for Good Will Hunting) -- Before Friday Night Lights came another NBC Friday night high school football series set in a small… read more »

It's been tougher on women in the battle to upgrade from well-known TV star to Best Actress Oscar winner. As shown in a recent post, seven men have achieved this feat, with former Bosom Buddies headliner Tom Hanks doing it twice for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump. But only three women have ever taken home the trophy after first achieving fame in a TV series. Sally Field climbed the highest mountain among either men or women, as you can see from the accompanying illustration. And like Hanks, she's a two-time winner. Otherwise it's a sparse field, so much so that only… read more »
