Idol ready to strike again as "gold standard" of singing competition shows

PASADENA, Calif. -- Playful, cocky and still the heavyweight champs, the personalities and producers of American Idol flaunted it late Sunday afternoon during the ongoing Television Critics Association press tour. "We are the original. We kind of invented this whole game that everybody is now copying," said Randy Jackson, the only judge remaining from the Fox juggernaut's inaugural season. "Right now, everybody chases this show," agreed Mike Darnell, the pint-sized president of Fox's Alternative Entertainment division. "This is the gold standard." America has voted. And the winner is... SCOTTY MCCREERY! Last night, Scotty McCreery won season 10 of American Idol. The two-hour special finale episode saw a number of music powerhouses take to the stage. Beyonce, Judas Priest, Lady Gaga, Tom Jones, Steven Tyler, Reeve Carney, Bono and The Edge. Have I missed anyone? Although the show lacked tension, it made up for it in emotion. Two teenagers, who apparently are quite into each other if their kiss was anything to go by, were having the night of their lives. BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- The news landed like a grenade just as TV critics were wrapping up Day Two of the ongoing network "press tour" with a Gossip Girl goes to Paris session presented by the CW network. Fox, which won't make its fall season presentation until Monday, nonetheless made Thursday's biggest splash with an email announcing that Ellen DeGeneres will be ending her tenure as an American Idol judge after just one season. Last night was the season 10 finale of Dancing with the Stars. Who won I hear you ask? Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger was crowned with the glitter ball trophy. What’s next for the DWTS contestants? Tour dates, where the contestants show off their dancing skills around the country, haven’t yet been announced for the ABC series.
