St. Patrick's Day: 'Irish Cream'

by on March 10th 2010 at 10:07 am

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Did you know that Guinness sees 5.5 million pints sold on any given day and on St. Patrick’s Day, that number more than doubles to 13 million pints! Did you know that 675,000 people attended the 2009 St. Paddy’s Day Parade and that BLUE is the original colour associated with St. Patrick!

Well Soon it’s the 17th March, the annual ‘feast’ day, the day when the Guinness and Irish cream flows and the flutes, fiddles and bodhrán’s are played. Yes, it’s time to stick that silly green hat on for St. Patrick’s Day! And to celebrate this saintly day, I’ve concocted a list of ‘Irish cream’, a lucky 7 - and these guys certainly have the ‘luck of the Irish’!

Colin Farrell

1. Colin Farrell, a beautiful actor brought to us from the green country. Farrell is one of the best known Irish actors who has served in many Hollywood films including Miami Vice, Minority Report, Daredevil and S.W.A.T. Farrell has won a plethora of awards, most recently ‘Best Actor in a Film’ at the Irish Film and Television Awards and in 2003, named one of the ’50 Most Beautiful People’ and World’s ‘Sexiest Man’ ;)

2. Pierce is up next, how could Mr. Bond himself not be up in the top 3? Pierce Brosnan, now 56, still manages to make women weak at the knees!  Charming and gorgeous, Brosnan appears in four Bond movies, Mrs Doubtfire, Mamma Mia and Dante’s Peak. He has also produced the films he has starred in such as the The Thomas Crown Affair and Laws of Attraction and set up his own production company, Irish DreamTime.

3. Gabriel Byrne sits at number 3! This Irish actor, film director, producer and writer is famous for all sorts. He’s starred in Stigmata, The Usual Suspects as well as playing D’Artagnan in The Man in the Iron Mask to mention but a few. The 59 year old Golden Globe Award winner is also proficient in Irish linguistics and still manages to make my big sister blush!

4. Liam Neeson is best known for his work in Schindler’s List and Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. Neeson is a treasured Hollywood actor who has recently changed his Irish citizenship over top the US. He is anticipated as John ‘Hannibal’ Smith in the 2010 A-Team movie as well as playing Zeus in the upcoming film Clash of the Titans and Abraham Lincoln in Lincoln, both due for a 2010/11 release.

Jonathan Rhys-Meyers

5. More Irish ‘talent’ comes your way in the form of Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. Born and raised in Dublin, Rhys-Meyers began his acting career and went on to appear in Vanity Fair, Alexander and Mission Impossible III which lead to his starring roles in The Tudors, Bend It Like Beckham and Match Point. Certainly no leprechaun, Rhys-Meyers is a gorgeous Irish actor we hope to see more of.

6. Originating from Cork, Cillian Murphy is another success churned out of the lucky Isle. Murphy is well known for his roles in 28 Days Later, Batman Begins and Red Eye as well as stage roles. For his contribution to the Irish film industry, Murphy debuted on an Irish postage stamp in a scene from The Wind That Shakes The Barley.

Stuart Townsend

7. Stuart Townsend, Irish actor and director best known for his work in Queen of the Damned and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen lands himself at then end of my list. He attended the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin alike Colin Farrell and has turned his hand to directing too!

Other top Irish actors:

Stephen Rea, Ciarán Hinds, Kenneth Branagh, Peter MacDonald.

Mmm...well that Irish cream went down well didn’t it! And I hope you agree these Irish men certainly have more talent than Louis Walsh or Jedward! And please, leave a comment and let me know which Irish beauties you believe should be up here in my top 7!

Enjoy St.Paddy’s Day folks, and if you find that treasure at the end of the rainbow… save some for me!
