After 10 seasons, The CW is finally saying goodbye to Smallville. Yup that's right. Not only is it the season 10 finale of Smallville this Friday - it's the series finale too. The finale airs on Friday 13th 8/7c on The CW. Plus the episode, titled 'Finale' just so you know it's the finale, is a double bill so don't make any other plans! Not sure how I'll cope without Tom Welling in my life. Don't worry about Tom not having a job now Smallville has been axed because he's the Executive Producer of Hellcats. Something I've only just discovered!
What's going to happen in the Smallville series finale? My sources tell me that Lex Luthor aka Michael Rosenbaum will be making an appearance. And Clark takes the last step to becoming the Man of Steel. John Glover, Annette O'Toole and John Schneider will also be making one last appearance on the show. Lois and Clark may be tying the knot, finally! Executive producers have already revealed that something big happens for Chloe where fans "get to see her shine." There may be some flashforwards in the show too... Don't forget that if you miss the series finale, it is repeated on Thursday, 19th May or watch full online episodes here. What also is pretty cool, come Friday Smallville will be the longest running science fiction TV series in the United States.
To mark the end of a great series, below is a little recap of each season.
Season one is where all the magic started. Viewers are introduced to Clark Kent - a not so typical high school student - who is learning how to use his superhuman abilities. Not only is Clark learning to accept himself, he is forced to deal with meteor-infected people pretty much all the time and save the whole town from death. Lex's troubled past and how this conflicts with his friendship with Clark is also a recurring theme throughout the season. Amy Adams makes an appearance in episode 7, Craving, where she stars as a human-fat eating monster.
In season two, Clark learns his true identity about who he is, where he originally came from and more importantly, his destiny. The characters' lives and relationships are explored in more depth, including Lana Lang's parantage and Chloe (Allison Mack) finally admits to Clark how she really feels! Clark confides in best friend Pete (Sam Jones III) his secret. Quite amusingly, Clark goes through puberty in this season, but in a different form to the average male, by shooting bursts of heat from his eyes. The second season ends with Clark leaving Smallville under the influence of red kryptonite.
With Clark missing, Pete and Jonathan head to Metropolis looking for him which results in a deadly battle between father and son. Clark develops another superpower (super hearing) when he is temporary blinded, Lex's memory is erased and Lana leaves for Paris.
Lois Lane (Erica Durance) is introduced to the series in season four to investigate the apparent death of her cousin Chloe, who isn't really dead but in hiding. Lana returns from Paris with her new boyfriend in tow. Lana also becomes possessed in this season...it's very confusing.
Lex and Clark's friendship is over after Lex organises Lana, Jonathan and Martha to be taken hostage. Clark experiences silver kryptonite for the first time. Clark finally decides to reveal his secret to Lana, only for her to die. Trying to save her, time is reversed but devastatingly someone else close to Clark dies in her place - Jonathan.
Lana marries Lex in season six. Fool. This plot annoyed me actually...talk about sloppy seconds! Lana was forced to marry Lex, but she shouldn't have been dating him in the first place. Clark develops ANOTHER power when he develops a cold.
Season seven sees Clark's cousin Kara (Laura Vandervoort) come to Smallville, where she saves Lex Luthor from drowning - of all the people she could've saved!? Pete Ross comes back to Smallville after four years, although temporarily.
Season eight was quite a significant season for the character of Clark Kent. It was this season that his relationship with Lois Lane develops into something romantic. Clark starts working for the Daily Planet. Sounds a bit like The New Adventures of Superman!
In season nine, Clark finally embraces his destiny and starts to wear the family crest on his chest - the beginnings of the iconic superman costume. He also asks Lois out on a date, but stands her up in order to save Oliver. And guess what Clark is exposed to? Yes another form of kryptonite! In the season finale, Clark reveals to Lois he is 'The Blur'.
To celebrate the success of Smallville over the years, original cast members returned to say a final farewell to the Superman series. Annette O'Toole and John Schneider returned, along with Kristin Kreuk and Michael McKean (Perry White). Other characters including Lionel Luthor (John Glover), Brianiac (James Marsters) and Clark's cousin Kara also made guest appearances. The rest of the story line is too complex to summarise in a few sentences. All I can say is there's lot of travelling to an alternate-universe. Brain frazzling!
