Reality TV - why do we keep watching?

It's mindless entertainment; something to put on in the background or watch when you're nursing a sore head (self-inflicted or otherwise). So why do we keep watching? I'll admit I'm a fan of a few "reality" TV shows, and I'm slightly ashamed to say it. Patience my dear Watson, Sherlock's not far away now. Over the last month the creators of the BBC's modern day take on Sherlock Holmes have released the names of the first two episodes, sparking excited speculation amongst fans. The first episode of Season Three will be called The Empty Hearse, ingeniously suggesting Sherlock's return whilst coming close to Doyle's, The Adventure of the Empty House.
