Reality TV - why do we keep watching?

It's mindless entertainment; something to put on in the background or watch when you're nursing a sore head (self-inflicted or otherwise). So why do we keep watching? I'll admit I'm a fan of a few "reality" TV shows, and I'm slightly ashamed to say it. What ever happened to The Simpsons?

Yes, I know that they're still running and are now well into their 24th season, but sadly they've been hopelessly lame for a long time. As I was growing up, I would always drop whatever I was doing to rush to the TV at 6pm (EST) for the beginning of The Simpsons. My younger brother was never far behind and although my parents thought it was "a stupid show", I would always catch them laughing at the jokes that I didn't quite understand (it was a great show and they knew it!). Patience my dear Watson, Sherlock's not far away now. Over the last month the creators of the BBC's modern day take on Sherlock Holmes have released the names of the first two episodes, sparking excited speculation amongst fans. The first episode of Season Three will be called The Empty Hearse, ingeniously suggesting Sherlock's return whilst coming close to Doyle's, The Adventure of the Empty House.
