Less is more?

by Lottie on July 31st 2007 at 9:11 am

We keep on emphasising that we want the site to be clean and simple, without flashing extras, banners, ‘hot celebrity gossip’ or any such white noise. There are plenty of TV and film sites out there where you can find out pretty much anything except for reliable information about when and when your favourite shows and actors are on. If I want to know Nicole Kidman’s shoe size or be told that I’m just the person who would love Return of the Demon Duck Volume III, I’m fine – but find out when Frasier’s next showing on my living room telly? – not a chance.

That’s not to say that we don’t get excited about the possibilities of building on the basic LocateTV premise by adding various features that might enhance and personalise the whole experience. It’s so tempting because the TV and film genre particularly lends itself to add-ons and collaborations, as it permeates so many areas of our lives. Our discussions constantly move between the great applications we could create from all this data we are collecting, and the certainty that the sites we love ourselves are those that specialise, in a medium where inclusiveness usually just looks like anarchy.

This is why we’re planning a very collaborative approach as LocateTV launches, kicking off with the blogger event tomorrow and building on that with a two-week private beta phase. We’ll be choosing a mix of authoritative net voices but also everyday enthusiasts to try it out and give us feedback about what direction they think we should be headed. Do make sure you register if you want a chance to be part of private beta.

Do you agree with our instincts – is less becoming more in the over-developed Web 2.0?

Friendly advice…

by Lottie on July 30th 2007 at 12:47 pm

There have been a number of incidences of visitors entering search terms into the email submission form, while this is great that we get such a quality insight into what terms you guys and gals will be looking up once we launch, it would be rather more beneficial for you all if you just gave us your email address! We will use your email address to inform you of any important events in the development of LocateTV and so you can be among the first to hear when we will be opening up our beta trial.

All the best,

Sid

DVDone

The whole development team are really excited this week as our live DVD price comparison lookup has just come together. It’s amazing to see how much the price of the same disk varies from different retailers. We had been waiting for commercial relationships to be set up and for finalised page designs. Now – across both the US and UK – we have relationships with the leading retailers and can dynamically query prices for all DVDs related to the TV show or movie you are interested in. How do we know which DVDs are relevant? Well, they are all matched and pre-approved by our hard working data operations team. For each DVD, the page simply retrieves the latest and greatest prices then inserts them, Web 2.0 style.

We’ve also made particular effort to present the information in a much simpler way than other sites I’ve seen. Because TV and film search is our business, there’s no faffing around selecting what type of product you want to compare: a simple search by title and the DVDs are right in front of you with just one click of the DVD tab, complete with easily recognisable box thumbnails. Prices are clearly presented, with the cheapest first of course. I’ve already discovered that my regular internet retailer is often undercut elsewhere – my loyalties will have to change!

All in all, the inclusion of “related DVDs” to the shows on LocateTV is a really worthy addition – and it makes all the difference exactly how they’re sourced and presented.

Repeats: they’re here to stay

by Lottie on July 27th 2007 at 1:29 pm

Repeats and LocateTV make natural bedfellows. Missing a key episode of your favourite show, but scouring the listings for a chance to see it again to no avail (Sunday afternoon? Surely it’s repeated on Sunday afternoon) – is exactly the kind of scenario in which Locate will be a godsend.

Moreover, the launch seems particularly timely, as repeats are on the increase. Back at the start of July the BBC director general Mark Thompson warned that the airing of cost-efficient repeats is likely to rise as the corporation’s licence-fee settlement has proved lower than they hoped – particularly painful as they are currently facing a £2 billion shortfall. In fact, it is also particularly ironic, as back in 2005 the BBC chairman Michael Grade declared that prime time hours on BBC 1 and 2 should aim to be ‘repeat-free zones’ within ten years.

However, this is not just a trend imposed by TV execs. The weekly ratings from the US networks certainly indicate that repeats are what people watch most; old episodes of shows such as CSI, Law & Order and Despearate Housewives regularly top the Neilsen charts, and a recent CBS All Repeat Night beat the other networks’ offerings easily.

Repeats have also become part of national traditions. Only Fools and Horses is as much a part of a British Christmas as soggy sprouts, and the little-known comedy sketch Dinner For One is, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, the most frequently repeated TV program ever, watched throughout Germany every New Year.

Of course, most of us also claim to love innovative new drama, and bemoan ‘lazy programming’; our relationship with repeats seems pretty love-hate.

Surely the differentiator between repeats being a good thing or a bad thing is the ability to choose. For some, heaven is a late-night Sex and the City rerun after a night out, and hell finding nothing but old Simpsons back-to-back. For others, it’s the reverse.

I for one am looking forward to using LocateTV to catch up with frustrating misses and revisit old friends whilst filtering the dross – especially if repeats are only going to be…. well, more repetitive.

Very Exclusive Exciting Event

by Lottie on July 26th 2007 at 9:17 am

The first move toward private beta has been advanced like a virgin pawn upon the shining chessboard of Web 2.0.

Next week we are bringing together a handful of the UK’s most informed and enthusiastic TV and film bloggers in a very cool venue in London (you know who you are, you lucky few) to meet the team, have a chat and get a chance to play with the site.

We specifically wanted to avoid any kind of slick PR or press event, to focus on something relaxed and collaborative. I suggested this might work because my own introduction to the project, when Colin (Project Leader type thing) just sat with me in a room and told me about it, was so engaging. I loved his down to earth, genuine enthusiasm. The idea for LocateTV really did grow out of real world frustrations (see June’s The Big Idea post) and consequent determination to fill a big gap in the market for a TV and film content search engine devoted to a good user experience. In a world of ever more gimmicky and devious marketing strategies, simply talking to the guys who have created and nurtured this project feels refreshingly authentic.

Hopefully it’ll also be a chance to get some feedback about what these triallist love and what we could do better. This is early days and even when the site’s up in alpha we plan to continue improving, refining and enriching LocateTV, so a constant, honest dialogue with the people who will be using it every day is a central part of our philosophy.

We’ll let you know how it all goes next week, so you’ll also be able to start getting some opinions from real users outside our bubble. Pretty scary, pretty cool.
